Module Overview: Every development professional must be proficient in the essential skills and set of tools that comes under the umbrella of Development Strategy and Planning. Learning Objectives: This module is designed to provide the development professional with an understanding of the benefits and best practices of development strategy and planning. It will explore specific elements of strategy, provide a guided process for evaluating an organization’s current strategy, include a matrix and worksheet to evaluate and prioritize recommended changes to the strategy, and give specific steps for planning and execution that will directly enhance the organization’s development results.
Requirements for Receiving Credit
Credit for the module will be determined on the following criteria:
- Successful completion and submission of five Reflection assignments demonstrating that the participant has read required resources and reviewed the presentation content;
- Engage in all the topic forum discussions for all five sessions

Topics
Session 1 – How to create a relational development strategy that is aligned with vision This session covers the priority of donor relationships and telling the story, how to map out the vision of the future, assess the current situation and close the gap between the two.
Session 2 – How to create a high impact, profitable and sustainable nonprofit This session provides practical tools to assess which of a ministry’s core activities produce high mission impact and inspire the level of funding that will lead to sustainability, which ones do not and what to do about it.
Session 3 – How to become a well-run and well-resourced organization This session covers how to lead, measure success, get things done, get and keep the right people, gather the right resources, and build momentum for the future.
Session 4 – How to understand and manage the mechanics of planning This session walks through the practical mechanics of development planning and how to implement the newly revised development strategy step by step.
Session 5 – How to ensure that execution is consistent and effective This session covers the processes, work flow, staff responsibilities, and reporting requirements that flow out of the newly revised development strategy and planning process. |
